Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday and called for close communication between the two countries on issues concerning the Korean Peninsula, Lee's office said. Lee emphasized the "complete recovery" of bilateral ties, highlighted by his consecutive meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping last year and this year, during the meeting at Cheong Wa Dae.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of horizontal and mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic sphere, founded on political trust. He urged Wang to continue strategic communication with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac on South Korea-China relations and Korean Peninsula issues.
Wang conveyed greetings from Xi and noted the stable development of bilateral relations. He committed to actively implementing agreements reached between Lee and Xi, ahead of the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year. Wang also sought Seoul's support for China's hosting of this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, to which Lee pledged full support.
Lee requested Wang to convey his greetings to Xi. The meeting was followed by separate talks and a luncheon between National Security Adviser Wi and Wang, where they discussed bilateral relations and the peninsula's security situation.
Wi outlined Seoul's peace efforts with North Korea and its approach to denuclearization, beginning with Pyongyang halting its nuclear program. He called on China to play a "constructive role" in these policies. Wang assured the "continuity and stability" of China's policy and pledged to contribute to peace and stability on the peninsula.
Both parties exchanged views on the changing international security landscape, agreeing on the importance of respecting each other's positions and cooperating to expand common ground amidst political and economic interconnections. Wang invited Wi to visit China, which was accepted, the presidential office added.
