Lee Hails S. Korea-Indonesia Partnership for KF-21 Fighter Jets as ‘Model’ Defense Cooperation

Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung has voiced hope for deeper bilateral ties with Indonesia, touting their joint development of the KF-21 fighter jet as a "model example" of global defense cooperation. Lee made the remarks in an interview with the Indonesian newspaper Kompas released Tuesday, a day ahead of his summit talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Seoul.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee emphasized the significance of the Korean-Indonesian collaboration on the next-generation fighter jet, describing it as a potential global benchmark for international defense industry cooperation. He expressed optimism that their mutual success would pave the way for expanded defense cooperation, including in areas such as naval vessels and air defense systems.

South Korea initiated the KF-21 development program in 2015, aiming to create a homegrown supersonic fighter, with Indonesia joining as a partner. The first production model of the jet was unveiled last week, and Seoul is planning to finalize a deal to export 16 units to Indonesia.

Lee also highlighted the increased significance of both countries as international norms and institutions face challenges. He noted that South Korea and Indonesia, sharing democratic values, a rules-based international order, and a commitment to free trade, have been crucial in advancing multilateralism.

Further, Lee stated that South Korea's technological expertise and economic development experience, combined with Indonesia's human and natural resources, could help both nations reduce overdependence on specific markets and diversify their economic structures. A road map for cooperation is expected to be announced during President Prabowo's state visit, marking a new milestone for the next decade of bilateral relations.
