Milan: Figure skater Lee Hae-in ranked ninth after Tuesday's short program in the women's singles event at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Lee's solid Olympic debut, which netted her a new season-best score of 70.07 points, was among few noteworthy performances by a South Korean athlete on a day when the country failed to add to its medal total. South Korea is in 16th place in the medal table with one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. The competition will end Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee's fellow South Korean, Shin Ji-a, finished 14th with 65.66 points. In the women's curling tournament, South Korea lost to Switzerland 7-5 at Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium in Cortina d'Ampezzo, 260 kilometers northeast of Milan. South Korea dropped to 4-3 for the competition with two more matches left in the round-robin stage, while Switzerland improved to 5-2.
With the top four teams advancing to the semifinals, South Korea is in fifth place. Sweden (6-1), already qualified for the semifinals, is up next on Wednesday followed by Canada (4-3), currently in fourth place thanks to a tiebreak edge over South Korea, on Thursday.
Two South Korean teams in action in the two-men bobsleigh event both finished well outside medal contention at Cortina Sliding Centre in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Pilot Kim Jin-su and brakeman Kim Hyeong-geun finished in 13th place with a time of 3:43.60 after four runs. The tandem of pilot Suk Young-jin and brakeman Chae Byung-do ranked 19th with a time of 3:44.61.
Both teams will look for better showings in the four-man event starting Saturday. The women's snowboard slopestyle final, with South Korean Yu Seung-eun set to compete, was postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday due to heavy snow at Livigno Snow Park in Livigno, 140 kilometers north of Milan. Yu, who won the bronze medal in the women's big air last week, will look to become the first South Korean snowboarder to win multiple medals at a single Olympics.
