Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday criticized politicians for encouraging people to purchase multiple homes for investment or even seeking profits themselves, calling them the "real ills" of society. Lee made the remarks on social media platform X, sharing a news article of Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the main opposition People Power Party, who accused Lee of labeling owners of multiple homes as "social ills."
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee argued that the true responsibility for the issues in the real estate market lies with the politicians who created and maintained a flawed system. He stated, "If we were to truly condemn the social ills, the blame should fall not on the owners of multiple homes who took advantage of the flawed system, but on the politicians who created and implemented such a system."
Lee further criticized politicians for failing to make the ownership of multiple homes a burden rather than a benefit. He accused them of not addressing unfair privileges and instead encouraging speculation. Moreover, he suggested some politicians engaged in conflicts of interest by profiting from owning multiple homes themselves.
Lee's comments followed criticism from Rep. Jang, who labeled Lee's social media posts about the real estate market as "pathetic" and accused him of stigmatizing owners of multiple homes. Lee has consistently urged these owners to sell their properties before the planned expiration of the heavy capital gains tax exemption in May.
