Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung announced on Thursday that it is time to initiate discussions on amending the nation's Constitution, urging the National Assembly to spearhead the potential amendment process.
According to Yonhap News Agency, in a Facebook message commemorating the 77th anniversary of Constitution Day, President Lee stressed the necessity of a "people-centered constitutional amendment." He pledged to collaborate with the legislature to ensure that the people's will is accurately represented in the revision process.
President Lee commended the nation's democratic resilience, which successfully overcame a failed martial law attempt by the ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol. He expressed the need for the Constitution to evolve with changing times, likening it to changing clothes with the seasons.
The President emphasized that the revised Constitution should acknowledge the nation's painful history, guide it toward a just future, and serve as a living promise that encapsulates the dreams and aspirations of the people.
To achieve this, Lee proposed several elements for inclusion in the amended Constitution. These include the spirit of the 1980 pro-democracy movement, enhancement of basic rights, expansion of local autonomy and decentralization, and reforms to power institutions.
Previously, during his campaign, Lee had suggested a constitutional amendment allowing presidents to serve two four-year terms. However, this marks the first instance of him advocating for a revision since assuming office in early June.
