Ankara: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in discussions regarding cooperation on the construction of U.S. military vessels. The dialogue took place during a dinner at the ongoing North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit, according to a statement from Lee's presidential spokesperson on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the discussions were held at a banquet hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. These talks are a follow-up to a previous request by President Trump for South Korea's assistance in building military vessels, initially raised during the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Evian-les-Bains, France, last month.
President Lee expressed his willingness to cooperate with President Trump's request, emphasizing the advanced capabilities of South Korea's shipbuilding industry. The two leaders agreed to initiate working-level consultations to further explore the specifics of this proposed collaboration.
This meeting marks the second encounter between Presidents Lee and Trump within a three-week period, following their initial discussion on the sidelines of the G7 summit in France. During their recent talks, they also revisited their previous agreement to play golf together and discussed the potential for President Lee to visit the United States in the future, which might include a golf outing.
