Seoul: President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday emphasized the necessity for a constitutional amendment, suggesting that the current Constitution may be outdated.
According to Yonhap News Agency, during a televised Cabinet meeting, President Lee underscored the importance of amending the Constitution in a partial and phased manner if required. He remarked, "There needs to be a practical approach to do as much as possible. I think it would be practical to pursue a partial change in phases to an extent agreed (by relevant parties)."
His comments come just a day before the National Assembly is set to vote on a Democratic Party-led bill concerning a constitutional amendment. This amendment aims to primarily strengthen the conditions under which martial law may be declared.
President Lee pointed out that the Constitution has remained unchanged for nearly four decades since 1987. He argued that the current charter might not adequately secure the nation's future, given the significant changes the country has experienced over the years.
It's important to note that any amendment to the Constitution requires approval through a public referendum.
