Seoul: Lawmakers of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) and other political factions have put forth a resolution urging the immediate renewal of dialogue between North Korea and the United States, aiming to establish a lasting peace framework on the Korean Peninsula.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the resolution also advocates for the South Korean government's backing of a plan by a Korean American civic group to include a civilian delegation in any potential summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang. The Korean American Public Action Committee has announced its intention to gather a group of civilians and Korean American families, separated from their North Korean relatives, to accompany Trump if such a meeting occurs.

The initiative, spearheaded by DP Representative Song Young-gil, garnered signatures from 83 other lawmakers of the Democratic Party, two from the minor Rebuilding Korea Party, independent Representative Choi Hyuck-jin, and Representative Cho Kyung-tae, the sole participant from the main opposition People Power Party.

"The resolution is a reaction to the endorsement by 52 U.S. House Representatives of the Peace on the Korean Peninsula Act, which aims to transform the Korean War armistice into a peace treaty and establish formal diplomatic relations," Song stated at a press briefing held at the National Assembly.

Song called upon the government and parliament to proactively assume the role of a "pacemaker" in facilitating a summit between the U.S. and North Korea. He also proposed sending a parliamentary delegation to Washington to seek U.S. support for the initiative.
