Law Firm to File Class-Action Suit Against Coupang’s U.S. Headquarters Over Personal Data Leak

Seattle: A U.S. subsidiary of a South Korean law firm announced Monday its intention to file a class-action suit against the U.S. headquarters of e-commerce giant Coupang Inc. The suit is in response to a significant personal data leak, with the firm pledging to thoroughly investigate the case and secure "substantive" compensation for affected individuals.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Kuk-il, the managing partner at Daeryun law firm, revealed during a press conference that SJKP Law Firm LLP, Daeryun's U.S. branch, intends to file for punitive damages against the Seattle-based company. The filing is expected to occur at a U.S. federal court in New York as early as this month.

Coupang disclosed late last month that the personal data of 33.7 million customers had been compromised, including their names, phone numbers, and email addresses. Approximately 200 individuals have already joined the lawsuit against the company in the U.S., with expectations for this number to increase.

Kim emphasized Coupang's corporate registration in Delaware and its status as a U.S. firm listed on the New York Stock Exchange. He stated, "We will ensure that with the strong sword of the U.S. judicial system, we will get to the bottom of this incident, and victims will receive substantive compensation."
