Late Filipino Captain Recognized as Korean War Hero of July

Seoul: The veterans ministry announced that late Philippine Army Capt. Conrado Yap has been named the Korean War hero of July, honoring his sacrifice and bravery during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yap served as the commander of the special company of the Philippine 10th Battalion Combat Team. He played a crucial role in the Battle of Yuldong in April 1951, a defensive engagement against Chinese communist forces. Despite being outnumbered, the Philippine forces, under his leadership, managed to hold off the Chinese attacks for two days.

Yap's special company successfully retook a strategically important hill from the Chinese forces. Tragically, Yap sustained severe injuries during the battle and died while heroically rescuing survivors and recovering the bodies of his fellow soldiers. In recognition of his valor, the South Korean government posthumously awarded him the Taegeug Order of Military Merit in 2018.

The Philippines contributed a total of 7,420 troops to the Korean War. Among these, 112 soldiers lost their lives, 299 were wounded, and 16 went missing.
