Gwangju: The last missing worker in a tragic construction site accident in Gwangju was found dead, increasing the total death toll to four. The incident occurred at a library construction site two days prior, resulting in a fatal collapse.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the body of the 58-year-old worker, identified by his surname Kim, was discovered at the site. This discovery brings the death toll from the accident, which took place on Thursday, to four. Earlier in the day, authorities located the body of another worker, surnamed Ko, at approximately 1:03 a.m. Two additional workers lost their lives on the day of the accident.

Officials have indicated that the collapse likely began as workers were pouring concrete onto the rooftop of the two-story structure, causing the ground floors to plummet to the underground level. The library, which was under construction, is a project of the Gwangju metropolitan government and is being built on the site of a former waste incineration plant, approximately 300 kilometers south of Seoul.

In response to this growing concern, Land Minister Kim Yun-duk announced on Friday that the government plans to introduce a special law aimed at enhancing construction workplace safety. This law will enforce stricter penalties for fatal accidents, addressing the increasing number of such incidents at construction sites.

Since assuming office in June, President Lee Jae Myung has consistently emphasized the importance of implementing stronger measures to prevent industrial accidents, particularly following a series of incidents at workplaces managed by major construction companies.
