The explosion, which happened during construction, resulted in the death of 12 individuals and left at least 101 others injured.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the timeline of significant events in Korea also includes a pivotal decision by FIFA in 1996, the world's soccer governing body, which announced that Seoul would host the opening ceremony and Yokohama the closing ceremony for the 2002 World Cup finals.
