The 2016 Nuclear Security Summit took place in Washington, D.C., from March 31 to April 1. On its sidelines, President Obama met with President Park Geun-hye of the ROK and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan on March 31, making remarks on shared security concerns, including the North Korean nuclear threat and global terrorism. President Park held a bilateral on March 31 with Prime Minister Abe, where they exchanged views on bilateral relations, regional politics, and cooperation for implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution on the DPRK. Park also met with President Xi Jinping of China on March 31. They emphasized the importance of a close bilateral relationship and announced a continuation of strategic talks regarding the DPRK.
DOMESTIC POLITICS | 2016 General Election Campaigns
The official campaign period for the April 13, 2016, general election began on March 31 and will conclude on April 12. According to an April 1 Dong-A Ilbo poll, Saenuri received a 33.3 percent approval rate, the Minjoo party a 24.9 percent approval, and the People's Party an approval rating of 10.9 percent. During the campaign, several bills remain pending in the National Assembly as no plenary session has been held since the March provisional session opened.
