K-pop Rookie Ahof Explores ‘Rough Youth’ in New Album

Seoul: Rising K-pop rookie Ahof returned Tuesday with its second album, "The Passage," just four months after its debut, embracing the theme of "rough youth" that delves into the anxiety and pain of growing up. The nine-member boy band, formed on the SBS audition program "Universe League," confronts the turbulent transition between adolescence and adulthood in the latest EP.

According to Yonhap News Agency, member Woongki explained at the media showcase for the album in Seoul that while youth is often perceived as beautiful, it can also be difficult and painful. The concept of "rough youth" is about accepting instability and discovering one's genuine self. Cha added that the album reflects the group's journey of becoming stronger through challenging times, expressing their growth in Ahof's distinctive style.

The new EP, which follows the band's debut EP "Who We Are" released last July, contains five tracks. The main track, "Pinocchio," features a strong band sound and uses the classic fairy tale as a motif to explore sincerity. The band explained that the track is about the desire to be honest with a loved one despite feelings of capriciousness, anxiety, and wavering.

The quick comeback posed internal pressures for the group. Jeongwoo shared his anxiety about meeting expectations and the pressure to show a more mature side compared to their previous work. Despite his concerns about perfection, the support from fellow members helped him overcome these challenges. Woongki also noted a shift in their performance style, with the choreography for "Pinocchio" showcasing tougher dance lines compared to their debut song, "Rendezvous."

Ahof has rapidly gained fame, topping three local TV music charting programs within 10 days of their debut and holding a sold-out standalone "fan concert" in the Philippines. Han reflected on the concert experience, describing it as unforgettable and likening the audience to a universe of twinkling stars. Filipino member JL expressed his joy at performing in his home country and shared his aspirations for continued artistic growth.

However, the group will temporarily perform as an eight-member team as Chih En has suspended activities due to health reasons. Jeongwoo confirmed Chih En's focus on recovery, adding that the Taiwanese member provided encouragement and compliments during the album's preparation. The group is committed to working hard to fill his absence.
