K-pop Group Close Your Eyes Explores Jazz Funk in New Album

Seoul:K-pop boy band Close Your Eyes has embraced jazz funk in its latest release, aiming to transcend genre boundaries and present a more authentic side of the band.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the group's fourth EP, "256th Note," is scheduled for release on Wednesday at 6 p.m. It draws inspiration from the freedom and spontaneity of jazz, where musicians create fleeting moments through improvisation. At a press conference in Seoul, member Minwook explained that the improvisational elements of jazz funk suited the group well, allowing them to express who they are naturally rather than being confined to one genre. The album's main track, "Drop That!," samples veteran singer Yoon Si-nae's "Enjoy This Night" and reinterprets it in the style of 1990s street hip-hop, combining jazz improvisation with hip-hop sampling techniques.

The band members, mostly born in the 2000s, had to study jazz and 1990s hip-hop closely, as these genres predate their generation. Member Seung-ho noted the initial unfamiliarity and pressure they felt in sampling a song by the respected artist Yoon Si-nae, but they were determined to do a good job.

Close Your Eyes was formed through JTBC's audition program "Project 7" in 2024 and debuted in April 2025 with the album "EternalT." They have since released "Snowy Summer" in July and "Blackout" in November, showcasing their growth and ability to break through limits.

The latest album marks another stylistic shift as the band seeks to expand its musical range. Member Yeo-jun expressed gratitude for the positive reception of their music and emphasized their desire to continue challenging themselves and growing as a team. The album features seven tracks, including "Drop That!" and the pre-release "Open Your Eyes," spanning several genres. Yeo-jun assured that listeners will find every genre enjoyable.

The group hopes the new release will broaden its audience. Member Kenshin expressed the desire for more people to recognize the name Close Your Eyes with this album.
