Seoul: Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won announced his withdrawal from candidacy on Saturday following controversy over allegations of lobbying related to a COVID-19 treatment. This decision comes a day after President Lee Jae Myung indicated that he would make a decision based on public expectations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim, a two-term lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party, held a press conference at the National Assembly to declare his decision. He expressed his regret, stating, "After deep deliberations, I decided to withdraw my candidacy as justice minister. I accept with a heavy heart that I did not meet the people's expectations and will deeply reflect on my shortcomings."

The decision follows the adoption of his confirmation hearing report by a parliamentary committee on Thursday, amidst opposition from the main People Power Party due to the lobbying allegations. Kim has been accused of lobbying the food and drug safety ministry to expedite clinical trials for a COVID-19 treatment in 2021, allegations which he has consistently denied.

The presidential office, in a press statement, acknowledged Kim's decision, marking it as a respected choice. This development also coincides with Gender Minister nominee Yong Hye-in's withdrawal on Sunday, amidst criticism regarding her plan to keep her proportional representation parliamentary seat if appointed.
