Seoul: Jeju Air Co. has announced a comprehensive ban on the use of portable battery banks on all its domestic and international flights. This decision, effective from Thursday, is aimed at addressing concerns over potential in-flight fire risks associated with these devices.

According to Yonhap News Agency, passengers traveling with Jeju Air will no longer be permitted to use power banks for charging electronic devices such as mobile phones and tablet computers during flights. The airline's decision follows an existing ban on charging battery banks using aircraft USB ports, which was implemented under government regulations last year.

Jeju Air emphasized its commitment to eliminating potential fire hazards linked to batteries by tightening these rules. The heightened concerns over battery banks stem from a significant fire incident in January 2025, involving an Air Busan aircraft at Gimhae International Airport in Busan. Authorities have tentatively linked the fire's origin to a portable battery located in an overhead bin.

In response to this incident, Jeju Air's proactive measure aims to enhance passenger safety by mitigating the risks associated with the use of portable batteries on flights.
