Japan’s Envoy Highlights Steady Relations with South Korea Amid Political Unrest

SEOUL: Japan's Ambassador to South Korea, Koichi Mizushima, underscored the enduring importance of the relationship between Japan and South Korea on Thursday, despite the ongoing political turbulence following South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment over his brief attempt to declare martial law. Mizushima's comments come as the two nations commemorate the 60th anniversary of normalized diplomatic relations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Ambassador Mizushima emphasized the unwavering significance of Japan-South Korea ties in his New Year's message, expressing optimism about the future collaboration between the two countries. The ambassador acknowledged the volatile political climate in South Korea but reiterated the need to maintain strong bilateral relations. His statement was shared via a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Reflecting on the previous year, Mizushima highlighted the advancements in Japan-Korea relations and expressed hope for continued progress. He pointed to people-to-people exchanges as a vital component supporting mutual understanding and proposed expanding cooperation in areas such as security and the economy. These exchanges have been pivotal in fostering goodwill and strengthening connections between the two nations.

The warming of relations between Seoul and Tokyo has been notable since President Yoon's announcement last March to compensate Korean victims of wartime forced labor, a move that did not require financial contributions from Japanese companies deemed responsible. This decision paved the way for renewed regular visits by leaders of both countries and revitalized exchanges within the private sector.

In addition to discussing bilateral ties, Mizushima extended condolences to the families affected by the tragic plane crash in South Korea's Muan County on Sunday, which resulted in 179 fatalities. His message of sympathy underscores the human aspect of diplomacy, even amid complex political situations.
