Japan emerges as most popular destination for S. Korean tourists
SEOUL, -- Japan has been the most popular overseas destination for South Korean travelers for the past couple of years, industry data showed Tuesday.
Japan absorbed about 20 percent of outbound South Korean tourists during the 2015-2016 period, followed by the United States and the Philippines, according to the statistics by Expedia, the world's biggest online travel agency.
Nearly half (42.6 percent) of South Korean tourists going abroad traveled to Asian countries. Osaka, Tokyo, Okinawa and Fukuoka were among the 10 most frequented foreign cities by South Koreans.
Taiwan became the fifth most popular foreign country for South Korean tourists last year, up two notches from the previous year.
Vietnam came in sixth last year, up from ninth from a year earlier, with Da Nang, Vietnam's third-largest city located halfway between the capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, witnessing a whopping 180.7 percent rise in the number of visiting South Korean tourists in 2016 from 2015.
"We expect the continuation of the trend for the coming years in which the number of South Korean tourists traveling to Asian countries is surging," an Expedia official said.
