Seoul: The interior ministry announced on Sunday that it has initiated steps to dismantle a police bureau operating under its jurisdiction, effectively reversing a policy from the previous administration that faced criticism for potentially compromising the political neutrality of the police force.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the police bureau within the Ministry of Interior and Safety was established in 2022 during the tenure of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. This marked the first instance in 31 years where the ministry had a dedicated organization to oversee police activities. The Yoon administration had justified the creation of the bureau as a measure to maintain checks on police authority, particularly as the police were poised to assume greater investigative responsibilities from the prosecution.
Despite its intended purpose, the bureau faced criticism for allegedly influencing the police agency by recommending candidates for high-ranking positions and implementing various support measures. Critics argued that such actions undermined the agency's independence.
The dismantling of the police bureau was a campaign promise made by President Lee Jae Myung. Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung emphasized that abolishing the bureau is a necessary step to enhance the neutrality and democratic oversight of the police force.
Officials indicated that a revised ordinance to eliminate the bureau is anticipated to gain approval at a Cabinet meeting by the end of the month.
