Seoul: The market capitalization of Hyundai Motor Co. approached the 100 trillion-won (US$67.7 billion) mark for the first time, driven by increasing investor optimism over its robotics and autonomous driving projects. In early trading, Hyundai's share price rose to 496,500 won, temporarily boosting its market cap to over 101.66 trillion won. However, gains were pared later, with the market cap stabilizing around 98.8 trillion won by 2:50 p.m.
According to Yonhap News Agency, industry analysts attribute the surge to Hyundai's strategic focus on robotics, highlighted by Boston Dynamics, the company's U.S.-based robotics affiliate. The affiliate recently introduced its next-generation humanoid robot, Atlas, and outlined its artificial intelligence robotics roadmap, which has sparked investor interest.
Hyundai's autonomous driving strategy has also played a crucial role. Motional, a U.S. joint venture of Hyundai Motor, is set to launch a fully driverless Level 4 robotaxi service in Las Vegas by 2026, further cementing Hyundai's commitment to innovation in this sector.
Market observers have noted that the potential for commercialization of humanoid robotics is gaining recognition among investors. Hanwha Investment and Securities reported that as commercialization preparations accelerate, Hyundai's momentum is expected to continue through 2028.
