Seoul: Hyundai Motor Group announced plans to establish a significant battery research and development center in South Korea to enhance its electric vehicle (EV) competitiveness. The announcement underscores the company's strategic focus on advancing battery technology as a critical component of its future mobility vision.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hyundai Motor Group recently held a topping-out ceremony for its Future Mobility Battery Campus in Anseong, located approximately 70 kilometers south of Seoul. This event marked ongoing construction progress since the project broke ground in January 2025. The company has invested 1.2 trillion won (US$818.3 million) into the facility, which spans 111,000 square meters. This development is part of the group's broader strategy to lead in next-generation battery research and development infrastructure, with the facility expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Hyundai Motor Group emphasized that the new battery campus would serve as its first comprehensive battery R and D hub. This initiative aims to internalize core battery capabilities and integrate battery technology research functions, thereby solidifying the company's position in the evolving EV landscape. Yang Heui-won, head of the R and D division at Hyundai Motor, stated, "Through the Future Mobility Battery Campus, we aim to seamlessly connect the entire battery ecosystem to foster cross-industry collaboration and accelerate technological advancement." The group remains committed to enhancing its EV battery competitiveness and promoting global electrification through strategic collaborations.
