Seoul: South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. announced it has signed an agreement with HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co. to develop a hydrogen fuel cell system for vessels. The collaboration marks a significant step in the pursuit of eco-friendly maritime solutions.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two companies, in conjunction with Pusan National University, formalized their partnership by signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at the development and commercialization of a marine hydrogen fuel cell system. This agreement was signed the previous day, as revealed by Hyundai Motor in a press release.
Under this strategic partnership, Hyundai Motor will be responsible for providing hydrogen fuel cells that are optimized specifically for marine use. Meanwhile, HD Korea Shipbuilding will focus on designing a hybrid electric propulsion system to complement the fuel cells. Pusan National University will play a crucial role by conducting assessments and testing on the system to ensure its efficacy and safety.
The ultimate goal of Hyundai Motor and HD Korea Shipbuilding is to integrate the hydrogen fuel cell system into eco-friendly vessels, such as liquefied hydrogen carriers. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote carbon neutrality and foster a sustainable global marine industry.
Hyundai Motor emphasized the importance of this cooperation, stating that it represents a critical step towards achieving carbon neutrality and setting new standards for future maritime mobility. The company is committed to expanding its influence in the sustainable marine sector through continued innovation and collaboration.
