Milan: Short track speed skater Hwang Dae-heon secured the silver medal in the men's 1,500 meters at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, marking his second consecutive medal in this event. Hwang finished behind Jens van 't Wout of the Netherlands in a final at Milano Ice Skating Arena, which saw nine skaters compete. This achievement follows his gold medal win four years ago in Beijing. Roberts Kruzbergs of Latvia completed the podium with a bronze.
According to Yonhap News Agency, this silver medal represents South Korea's second short track medal at these Olympics and is the nation's fifth medal overall. South Korea continues to lead the all-time short track medal tally with 26 gold medals and 55 medals in total. Hwang's latest success adds to his collection, bringing his career Olympic medal count to four.
In the same final, fellow South Korean Shin Dong-min finished just off the podium in fourth place. Both Hwang and Shin started the 13 1/2-lap race from the back. Early in the race, William Dandjinou of Canada held the lead, but a mishap involving Steven Dubois, who crashed into the padding, cleared some space for the rest of the competitors.
Hwang and Shin maintained their positions towards the back until Hwang began to accelerate with five laps remaining. A series of collisions among other skaters allowed Hwang to move into second place. Although Shin made contact with Dandjinou in the later stages, it provided Hwang an opportunity to advance to a podium position.
Despite not catching van 't Wout, Hwang celebrated his silver medal triumph amidst a challenging season marked by injuries. Hwang had sustained a knee injury in November of the previous year and was reportedly not at full fitness for the Olympics.
