Seoul: Financially troubled discount store chain Homeplus Co. said Wednesday it has resumed operations at all 67 of its outlets nationwide following a court decision to extend its rehabilitation proceedings.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Homeplus temporarily closed all 67 outlets on July 13, due to a lack of operating funds after the Seoul Bankruptcy Court terminated its rehabilitation proceedings earlier that month. The court had noted that the company failed to secure at least 200 billion won (US$130 million) needed to carry out its self-rescue plan.

The store chain's operations resumed after the court overturned its earlier decision on July 21, extending the proceedings until September 4 after Homeplus filed an appeal. The retailer, wholly owned by private equity firm MBK Partners, has been financially strained by a downturn in the discount store industry and entered court-led rehabilitation proceedings in March 2025.

MBK Partners acquired a 100 percent stake in Homeplus from British retailer Tesco Plc in 2015 for 7.2 trillion won. Homeplus previously operated 104 outlets across the country, but 37 of them are no longer in operation.
