Busan: HMM Co., South Korea's largest shipping company, announced that its shareholders have approved the plan to relocate the company's headquarters from Seoul to the southeastern port city of Busan. This decision was made during an extraordinary shareholders' meeting following an agreement last week between the company's management and the labor union.
According to Yonhap News Agency, HMM intends to complete the necessary legal procedures within this month and aims to move the chief executive office to Busan, which is approximately 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, by the end of the year. This strategic move aligns with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' earlier relocation from Sejong to Busan in December, as part of President Lee Jae Myung's initiative to transform Busan into a major maritime hub in Northeast Asia.
The relocation trend is not exclusive to HMM, as smaller shipping companies such as SK Shipping Co. and H-Line Shipping Co. have also opted to move their headquarters to Busan. President Lee has conveyed optimism that HMM's relocation will bolster the competitiveness of South Korea's shipping industry and contribute to balanced regional development. He has also pledged government support for HMM's relocation efforts.
