Historical Highlights: Key Events in Korean History

Seoul: Today in Korean history, several significant events unfolded, showcasing the dynamic political and social landscape of the nation over the years. Beginning in 1904, Korea's royal court under the Joseon Dynasty appointed U.S. diplomat D.W. Stevens as its foreign affairs adviser, marking a pivotal moment in Korea's diplomatic relations.

According to Yonhap News Agency, another crucial event occurred in 1945 when top diplomats from the United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union convened in Moscow. They announced a five-year United Nations trusteeship over Korea, a decision that significantly impacted Korea's post-war trajectory.

In 1978, Park Chung-hee was inaugurated as the ninth president of South Korea. Notably, he immediately pardoned then pro-democracy leader Kim Dae-jung, a move that had significant implications for the nation's political landscape.

The year 2000 saw delegates from South Korea arrive in Pyongyang for the first preliminary meeting on the establishment of inter-Korean economic cooperation talks, marking a significant step toward improved relations between the two Koreas.

In 2013, the transportation ministry issued a license for a new affiliate of the state-run Korea Railroad Corp. This decision, in response to striking workers, ended a decades-long loss-incurring rail monopoly, indicating a shift in the nation's transportation policies.

A foreign ministry task force in 2017 released the outcome of an extensive probe into a 2015 deal on Japan's wartime sexual slavery. It revealed that President Park Geun-hye's government had kept part of the deal secret to avoid criticism for concessions made to Tokyo, highlighting the complexities of diplomatic negotiations.

In a controversial decision in 2022, President Yoon Suk Yeol granted a special pardon to former President Lee Myung-bak, who was serving a 17-year prison term for bribery and embezzlement. The pardon canceled his remaining prison term and a substantial amount of unpaid fines, sparking widespread debate.

Most recently, in 2024, the National Assembly voted to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo, less than two weeks after he assumed office following the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol over his brief imposition of martial law. This marked the first instance of an acting president being impeached by parliament, underscoring the turbulent political climate in South Korea.
