Seoul: HD Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co., a prominent South Korean shipyard, announced on Monday that it has successfully secured a 340.3 billion-won (US$244.7 million) order to construct two very large gas carriers (VLGCs) for an Asian shipping company. The shipbuilding project further solidifies the company's position as a major player in the global shipbuilding industry. According to Yonhap News Agency, the construction of the VLGCs will be undertaken by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., one of the three shipbuilding units under HD Korea Shipbuilding. The vessels are scheduled for delivery by December 2027, as stated in a regulatory filing by the company. This significant order is part of the company's impressive track record for the year, having secured agreements to build 177 vessels with a total value of $19.8 billion, thereby surpassing its annual target of $13.5 billion. HD Korea Shipbuilding operates as a subholding company within the larger HD Hyundai conglomerate, which encompasse s shipbuilding, oil refining, and machinery sectors. The company oversees three domestic units: HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Mipo Co., and HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co. The recent order for gas carriers highlights its strategic focus on expanding its capabilities and market presence in the maritime industry.
