Seoul: Hanwha Systems Co., a defense solutions unit of South Korea's Hanwha Group, announced the completion of a new production facility in the southern region of the country. The facility, located in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, held a completion ceremony attended by key company and local government officials, including Chief Executive Officer Son Jae-il.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Hanwha Systems has successfully relocated operations from its existing plant to the expansive 89,000-square-meter site, an investment valued at 280 billion won (US$190.2 million). This new facility will focus on producing the company's flagship multi-function radar (MFR) and warship combat systems. It integrates core technologies and equipment, allowing for significant advancements in technological development and production scale.

The facility boasts the largest clean room in Korea's defense industry, covering approximately 5,000 square meters. This space will be dedicated to the production of electro-optical products and radar components essential for various weapons systems. Additionally, the material management room is equipped with logistics robots and automation systems, efficiently managing over 20,000 types of raw materials and advanced defense components.

Further enhancing its capabilities, the new facility includes a marine research institute. This institute aims to be a technological hub for developing future naval solutions, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to innovate unmanned naval vessels.

Since 2022, Hanwha Systems has exported MFRs to several Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Additionally, its warship combat system has been exported to the Philippines in 2022 and 2023. CEO Son emphasized the strategic importance of the Gumi facility, stating it will play a critical role in supporting the sustainable growth of Korea's defense industry while contributing to the local economy and job creation.
