Hanwha Eagles Secure Spot in Korean Series After 19-Year Hiatus

Daejeon: The Hanwha Eagles are headed to the Korean Series for the first time in nearly two decades after a decisive victory over the Samsung Lions. The Eagles triumphed with an 11-2 win at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark, clinching the best-of-five Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason series in a total of five games.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the win was celebrated by a sellout crowd of 16,750 and propelled the Eagles to the KBO championship stage, where they will face the LG Twins. Hanwha's starting pitcher, Cody Ponce, delivered an impressive performance with nine strikeouts over five innings. The Eagles' offense was also formidable, producing 13 hits, with standout contributions from Roh Si-hwan and captain Chae Eun-seong, who drove in five runs.

The LG Twins, who topped the regular season standings, automatically advanced to the Korean Series. The championship series, played over seven games, will commence at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. The Hanwha Eagles, last seen in the Korean Series in 2006 and champions in 1999, will aim to reclaim the title, while the LG Twins are pursuing their second title in three seasons.

Despite not pitching in the clinching game, Eagles pitcher Moon Dong-ju was named the series MVP. Moon, a regular season starter, made effective relief appearances, holding the Lions scoreless over six innings and striking out 10. His standout performance included a fastball clocked at 161.6 kilometers per hour, the fastest pitch recorded this year.

In Friday's decisive game, Hanwha's Ponce navigated through a challenging first inning and went on to keep the Lions at bay. The Eagles' lineup capitalized on their scoring opportunities early and expanded their lead through the game, securing a commanding victory. The Lions' defensive errors and the Eagles' strategic plays, including a two-run home run by Moon Hyun-bin in the eighth inning, sealed the game.

Hanwha's manager, Kim Kyung-moon, expressed appreciation for his team's resilience and Ponce's perseverance after being struck by a line drive. Kim emphasized the importance of seizing early scoring chances, which set the tone for their victory. Looking ahead, Kim intends to reinstate Moon Dong-ju to the starting rotation for the Korean Series, aiming to clinch his first title as a manager after four runner-up finishes.

In contrast, Samsung Lions' manager Park Jin-man acknowledged his team's fatigue and defensive lapses, but commended his players for their determination throughout the postseason. Park expressed optimism for the team's future, highlighting the current season as a foundation for growth.
