Gyeongju: The finance ministry announced on Thursday that Gyeongju, a city in the southeast of the country, has been chosen as the site for a significant 771.6 billion-won (US$552.8 million) project aimed at building the nation's largest hydrogen fuel cell power plant. According to Yonhap News Agency, this project is part of the fourth initiative funded by a government-led program designed to strengthen and rejuvenate the economies of less-developed regions. The initiative incorporates a novel regional investment model that leverages resources from the private sector, alongside government support. The planned 107.9-megawatt plant in Gyeongju, which is approximately 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is expected to generate enough electricity to supply power to 270,000 households, each consisting of four people, for a full year. The ministry outlined that construction of the facility is slated to commence in March, with the plant projected to be operational by March 2028. The finance ministry anticipates t hat the plant will ensure a stable power supply to industrial complexes in surrounding cities, thereby contributing to the expansion of related industries and further invigorating the local economy.
