Seoul: Long-distance freight transport using autonomous vehicles is set to commence trial operations on highways, marking a substantial advancement in the push towards self-driving technology, the transport ministry announced on Monday. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to foster the integration and acceptance of autonomous vehicles in daily logistics and transport operations. According to Yonhap News Agency, the ministry has designated six new autonomous vehicle test zones. These include major highways and select urban areas in Suwon, Hwaseong, Yongin, and Seoul's Dongjak district. These zones are strategically chosen to facilitate comprehensive testing and data collection necessary for enhancing the technology's efficacy and safety. The highway test zones are critical as they cover primary logistics routes on the Gyeongbu and Jungbu expressways, encompassing a total of 358 kilometers. This strategic coverage is expected to significantly contribute to the logistical backbone of the country, all owing for efficient and effective trials of autonomous freight transport. Furthermore, existing autonomous vehicle test zones in Gyeongju and Seoul have been expanded to accommodate more extensive testing operations. Notably, Gyeongju will see the operation of self-driving shuttle buses, which will connect key venues and accommodations during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit slated for October 2025. This move is designed to showcase South Korea's advanced autonomous vehicle capabilities to an international audience of world leaders. The transport ministry's initiative reflects a commitment to positioning South Korea at the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology, leveraging these trials to refine and demonstrate sophisticated self-driving systems on a global stage.
