Seoul: The government held a meeting with major restaurant companies Monday to call for efforts to eradicate shrinkflation and stabilize dining prices, officials said. In the meeting, the government acknowledged the challenges restaurant businesses face, such as rising ingredient prices and higher labor costs, but emphasized the importance of participating in efforts to stabilize prices and reduce the burden on consumers, according to officials from related ministries, including agriculture and finance. According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting was attended by representatives from major fried chicken brands like BBQ, BHC, and Kyochon 1991, as well as cafe and fast food chains, including Starbucks and Mom's Touch. "Shrinkflation could have a negative impact on the general credibility of the restaurant businesses," stated Kim Jung-wook, an official at the agriculture ministry, who also promised support measures for the dining industry. Shrinkflation is a strategy where companies reduce the size or quantity of a product while keeping the price unchanged. Recently, the fried chicken brand Kyochon faced criticism for shrinkflation after it decreased the portion size of its boneless fried chicken menu by 30 percent.
