Seoul: The government has announced the successful securing of a record amount of electricity supply capacity for the upcoming winter season, a move aimed at preparing for unexpected cold waves, according to the climate ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the government plans to maintain a weekly power supply capacity exceeding 100 gigawatts (GW) throughout the winter, with a reserve capacity of 17 GW, as stated by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. Specifically, for the third week of January, which is typically the coldest period during winter, the government has secured a record 111.5 GW power supply.

Authorities anticipate that the country will experience maximum electricity demand ranging between 88.8 GW and 94.5 GW in the third week of January. This demand is expected to reach its peak if a cold wave coincides with heavy snowfall. South Korea recorded its highest-ever power demand of 94.5 GW for winter on December 23, 2022.
