Government Intensifies Financial Market Surveillance Amid Political Resignations

Seoul: Top economic and financial policymakers have committed to maintaining vigilant, continuous surveillance of the financial markets in response to rising political instability, following the resignations of both the prime minister and finance minister, as reported by the finance ministry.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this commitment was reaffirmed during an emergency meeting focused on macroeconomic and financial issues. The meeting was chaired by acting Finance Minister Kim Beom-suk and attended by Bank of Korea Governor Rhee Chang-yong, along with the heads of the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance released a statement expressing regret over the resignation of Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, which was prompted by an impeachment motion. The statement highlighted that Choi's departure comes at a time of significant economic and financial market uncertainty, compounded by recent U.S. tariff impacts and the impending launch of a new administration in just one month.

To mitigate potential negative effects stemming from the current political uncertainty, the authorities have pledged to continue their 24-hour emergency monitoring and response operations. Choi Sang-mok tendered his resignation late Thursday following the Democratic Party's push for his impeachment, which was promptly accepted.

Choi's resignation closely followed that of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who resigned amid speculation about his candidacy in the upcoming June 3 presidential election. In the wake of these resignations, Education Minister Lee Ju-ho, who also serves as deputy prime minister for social affairs, has assumed the role of acting leader.
