Geneva: Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed profound sadness over the devastation caused by recent floods in northern Pakistan, which have claimed over 400 lives. The disaster, intensified by severe monsoon conditions and climate change, has affected approximately 1.5 million people. Thousands are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, with significant damage reported to infrastructure including homes, schools, and health facilities.

According to United Nations, the UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell has highlighted concern over 37 countries failing to submit mandatory reports under the Paris Agreement’s transparency framework. This delay in reporting is seen as a hurdle to effective climate action. Stiell emphasized the importance of the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) as a tool for governments to bolster investment, design ambitious policies, and accelerate progress in clean energy and resilience.

The UN also voiced serious concerns over an Israeli attack on peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that Israeli military drones dropped grenades near UNIFIL personnel, who were engaged in road clearance in accordance with Security Council resolution 1701. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the incident underscores the precarious nature of peacekeeping in the region.

Funding cuts are reportedly affecting the operations of the Human Rights Council, according to President Jörg Lauber. The Council, which is set to meet in Geneva, faces challenges due to budget constraints impacting its ability to conduct research, travel, and gather testimonies for investigations. This financial strain threatens the Council’s capacity to address global conflicts and human rights issues effectively.
