Seoul: Foreign Minister nominee Cho Hyun vowed Thursday to actively respond to U.S. demands for higher tariffs and "modernizing" the alliance by closely consulting with the Donald Trump administration in a way that would mutually benefit both countries. Speaking before the National Assembly in a confirmation hearing on his appointment, Cho outlined his approach to pressing international issues and regional stability.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Cho emphasized his commitment to addressing U.S. tariffs and strengthening the alliance between South Korea and the United States. His remarks come as South Korea seeks to negotiate with the Trump administration for exemptions or relief from the impending 25 percent reciprocal and sectoral tariffs, which are set to take effect on August 1. The Trump administration's phrase "modernizing the alliance" involves urging allies to increase defense spending and share defense responsibilities.
Cho also highlighted his plan to resume dialogue with North Korea while pursuing denuclearization efforts. He stressed the importance of close coordination with the United States to achieve peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula through a phased and practical approach.
Furthermore, Cho aims to bolster the trilateral cooperation between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan, while encouraging constructive roles from China and Russia. He pledged to facilitate a three-way summit with China and Japan within the year and address unresolved historical issues with Japan patiently.
Cho also addressed South Korea's relationship with China, advocating for mature ties while maintaining a firm stance on sovereign issues such as disputes in the Yellow Sea. Additionally, he condemned military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, committing to work with the international community to ensure regional peace is not compromised.
