FM Kang to attend EU’s foreign council meeting this month

SEOUL, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will attend the European Union's foreign ministerial meeting this month to discuss the latest progress in inter-Korean relations, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Her attendance at the Informal Foreign Council of the EU on March 19 has been arranged at the invitation of the EU. It's the first time a South Korean foreign minister will attend the monthly meeting of foreign ministers of the EU member countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The council, presided over by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, exceptionally invites officials from outside of EU to discuss major foreign affairs issues.

In the meeting with EU foreign ministers, Kang plans to give an in-depth briefing on the current security situation of the Korean Peninsula and progress in inter-Korean relations, the ministry said. She will also call for EU's continued support and cooperation for Seoul's efforts to peacefully resolve the North Korean nuclear problem.

The foreign minister will also discuss the 55-year relationship between South Korea and EU as well as Seoul's policy toward Europe.

On the sidelines, Kang will hold a meeting with Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the ministry said.
