Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol Highlights South Korea’s Openness to Investment in New York

New york: Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol emphasized South Korea's openness to investment during a briefing with major global investors in the United States, highlighting the Seoul government's market reform efforts, according to his office.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the briefing took place in New York on Tuesday (local time) and included about 20 senior executives from 13 global investment banks and asset management firms, such as Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, as reported by the Ministry of Finance and Economy.

"South Korea's doors to investment are always wide open," Koo stated, as conveyed by the ministry. He encouraged investors to express any difficulties or suggestions, assuring them that the Seoul government would promptly address unreasonable regulations.

Seoul is implementing reforms across various sectors to advance its capital market to align with global standards, Koo explained. He detailed efforts to enhance corporate governance, strengthen investor protection through revisions to commercial law, and introduce tax reforms to encourage dividend payouts.

Koo noted that the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) has more than doubled since President Lee Jae Myung's administration began in June last year, attributing this growth to the government's reform initiatives. He also mentioned South Korea's eight-month inclusion in the World Government Bond Index, a move expected to stabilize the bond and foreign exchange markets.

The meeting was part of Koo's trip to the U.S., which will also take him to Washington, D.C., where he plans to attend meetings of the Group of 20 finance ministers and the annual gatherings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
