Ex-President Yoon’s Legal Team Appeals Five-Year Prison Sentence

Seoul: Former President Yoon Suk Yeol's legal team has officially submitted an appeal against a recent court ruling that sentenced him to five years in prison for obstructing an investigation. The appeal was filed following the initial verdict delivered last Friday by the Seoul Central District Court, which found Yoon guilty on multiple charges related to his brief imposition of martial law in December 2024.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the charges against Yoon primarily stemmed from his directive to the Presidential Security Service to prevent investigators from executing a detention warrant at the official presidential residence in January of the previous year. This action was at the heart of the obstruction of justice charge that led to his sentencing.

Yoon's legal team, immediately after the court's decision, expressed their intention to appeal, arguing that the ruling was "unacceptable" and not substantiated by the evidence gathered during the investigation. They maintain that the facts presented in court did not support the severity of the sentence handed down to the former president.
