Ex-President Yoon to Appear for Insurrection Trial After 4-Month Absence

Seoul: Former President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to appear in his ongoing insurrection trial later this week, marking his first presence at the proceedings in approximately four months, as confirmed by his legal team on Wednesday. Yoon's lawyers announced, "Former president Yoon will attend the insurrection trial on Thursday."

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yoon has remained absent from the trial since his re-arrest in July. He faces charges of leading an insurrection and abusing his power through his attempt to impose martial law in December. Despite his absence in this trial, Yoon did attend the initial hearing of a separate trial concerning martial law charges in September and also appeared in court for a hearing on his bail request.

Kwak Jong-keun, the former chief of the Army Special Warfare Command, is scheduled to testify at Thursday's hearing. Kwak alleges that Yoon ordered him to remove lawmakers from the National Assembly during the brief martial law period.

In a related development, Yoon's lawyers have appealed to the Constitutional Court to examine the legality of mandatorily broadcasting the trial, arguing that it infringes on Yoon's right to a fair trial. This request marks the third time Yoon has sought a Constitutional Court review concerning his insurrection charges.
