Yongin: Suk Hyun-jun, a former South Korea international player once convicted for dodging mandatory military service, is set for a revival in his football career by joining a new second-division club in his old hometown.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Yongin FC, preparing for their K League 2 debut in 2026, announced on Monday the acquisition of the 34-year-old Suk. The forward has had an extensive career primarily in Europe, playing in countries such as the Netherlands, Portugal, Turkey, and France, with a brief stint in Saudi Arabia. Suk has also earned 15 caps for the South Korean national team, with his last appearance in November 2018.

In October 2023, Suk was sentenced to an eight-month term, suspended for one year, for failing to comply with a government directive to return from France to complete his mandatory military service. He subsequently fulfilled his military obligation in a noncombat role.

Earlier in 2023, Suk signed with Jeonju Citizen FC, a fourth-division club, though he did not play for them. He later joined another fourth-division team, Namyangju FC, before deciding to return to Yongin, the city where he played football during his middle and high school years.

Reflecting on his return, Suk stated, "I grew up in Yongin, and this is a place where my football career started. I felt if I were to restart my pro career, then doing so in Yongin would mean something. As one of the older players, I will put the team ahead of my personal statistics and try to help us win."
