Seoul: The defense ministry announced Friday it has decided to impose "serious" disciplinary action against a top military intelligence commander for involvement in President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law attempt in 2024.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the disciplinary action targets Maj. Gen. Moon Sang-ho, former commander of the Defense Intelligence Command, due to his role in the martial law bid on December 3, 2024. Moon is reportedly facing removal from office, marking the most severe level of disciplinary action possible.

Moon is one of eight senior Army officers subjected to disciplinary measures by the defense ministry for their involvement in the martial law bid. He is charged with violating the duty to comply with regulations, as well as the duty of faithfulness and confidentiality. Additionally, Moon is on trial under physical detention, accused of playing a key role in an insurrection and leaking military secrets.

Earlier in the week, similar disciplinary actions were imposed on Yeo In-hyung, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command; Lee Jin-woo, former chief of the Capital Defense Command; and Kwak Jong-keun, former commander of the Army Special Warfare Command, among others.
