Ex-justice minister calls for voter support for opposition bloc to bring first lady to court

SEOUL, Former Justice Minister Cho Kuk urged voters to help the broader opposition bloc secure 200 seats in the 300-member National Assembly, saying the number is enough to have the first lady appear at court for a trial for allegations of wrongdoing. Cho, leader of the Rebuilding Korea Party, made the remark during a campaign speech in the southeastern city of Busan on the eve of Wednesday's general elections, accusing President Yoon Suk Yeol of abusing his veto powers to reject a special investigation of first lady Kim Keon Hee. His point was that should the opposition bloc win more than 200 seats or two-thirds of the total seats, it would give opposition parties enough power to override presidential vetoes and a special investigation into the first lady can take off. "If the broader opposition bloc secures 200 seats and a Kim Keon Hee special investigation bill passes through, then we will be able to see Kim Keon Hee stand trial at court in the second half of the year," Cho said. Latest polls suggest C ho's fledgling party is projected to secure a larger-than-expected number of seats in the upcoming vote, with the party trailing behind the satellite parties of the ruling and opposition parties in proportional representation.
