Seoul: Former Democratic Party (DP) lawmaker Hong Ik-pyo has been appointed as President Lee Jae Myung's new secretary for political affairs, according to an announcement from Cheong Wa Dae on Sunday. Hong is set to commence his new role on Tuesday, succeeding Woo Sang-ho, as confirmed by Lee Kyu-youn, the presidential secretary for public relations and communication, during a press briefing.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Hong has a history of collaboration with President Lee, having served as the DP's floor leader while Lee was the party leader. Hong is noted for his approach to politics, which emphasizes tolerance and cooperation, aiming to resolve conflicts and confrontations through compromise and agreement during his tenure as a lawmaker.
The change in appointment follows Woo's resignation offer, which appears linked to his intention to run for the position of Gangwon Province governor in the upcoming local elections set for June. This development raises questions about potential departures of other senior presidential officials due to a rule that requires civil servants intending to contest elections to resign 90 days before the elections.
