Seoul: The Democratic Party (DP) on Monday urged the Seoul High Court to delay the remanded trial of its presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung until after the June 3 election, asserting it would use all its powers to counter what it described as "the judiciary's coup."

According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP's demand follows considerations on whether to impeach Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae. This comes after the top court overturned the high court's acquittal of Lee in an election law violation case, sending it back for a remanded trial. The first session of the trial is scheduled for May 15.

"If the high court does not decide to postpone the trial by May 12, (we) will prevent the judiciary's coup from taking place by using all the powers given by the people to the legislative branch," Rep. Yun Ho-jung, a senior DP election committee official, stated during a press conference. May 12 marks the official start of campaigning for the June presidential election.

Yun emphasized the DP's determination to halt the trial proceedings and indicated potential legislative actions against interference. His comments imply that the DP might pursue the impeachment of Chief Justice Cho. The party postponed its decision on this matter following an emergency meeting of its lawmakers on Sunday.

The DP's urgency stems from the risk that Lee could be disqualified from running for office for five years if he receives a finalized sentence of a fine of 1 million won (US$717) or more for election law violations. Lee's candidacy could be imperiled if the final sentence is confirmed before the election on June 3.

In response to inquiries about the DP's request to delay the trial, Lee emphasized the need for fair election campaigns, referencing the Constitution. He expressed willingness to "respect" the party's decisions, including the potential impeachment of a Supreme Court justice.

"I believe the party will take the necessary measures in line with the perspective of the people to overcome this insurrection," Lee remarked. "I will respect the party's decision on the party's duties."

DP Rep. Park Sung-joon clarified in a radio interview that the party has resolved to entrust all decisions to its leadership, maintaining flexibility.

"There were opinions on considering even impeachment while leaving all possibilities open if the Supreme Court and the high court continue with unconstitutional and illegal behavior," Park stated.
