DP Mulls Parliamentary Probe into Supreme Court Chief Amid Impeachment Debate

Accra:Seoul The ruling Democratic Party (DP) announced on Wednesday its consideration of a parliamentary investigation into Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, amidst an ongoing internal debate over whether to pursue his impeachment.

According to Yonhap News Agency, DP spokesperson Cho Gye-won stated that the party is contemplating the investigation to examine "specific grounds" for impeaching Chief Justice Cho following the conclusion of the current parliamentary audit later this month.

The potential probe was highlighted after DP leader Kim Min-seok revealed that the party had started discussions on various impeachment options for Chief Justice Cho. Some DP lawmakers advocate for his impeachment due to his refusal to recommend a new Supreme Court justice candidate, as requested by the presidential office, and allegations of improper use of official funds. However, other lawmakers have questioned the necessity of this move, noting that Cho's term concludes in June.

The minor Rebuilding Korea Party has also contributed to the situation by submitting a draft impeachment motion to the DP, urging the party to support efforts to impeach Chief Justice Cho.
