Defense Ministry to Initiate Investigative Unit for Martial Law Probe Next Week

Seoul: The defense ministry announced it will establish a special investigative unit next week to examine allegations associated with former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed attempt to impose martial law.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the 40-member team will be operational starting Monday and will be headed by the acting chief of the ministry's prosecution office. The ministry stated that this unit would conduct necessary follow-up investigations based on findings from both the ministry's audit office and a special counsel team.

The establishment of this unit coincides with the nearing conclusion of special counsel Cho Eun-suk's investigation. Cho's team has been examining charges of insurrection and treason related to the proposed martial law imposition on December 3 of the previous year, with its mandate ending this Sunday.

Allegations have surfaced against the military's drone command for allegedly flying drones over Pyongyang during Yoon's presidency, seemingly to provoke North Korea and justify martial law. Additionally, a military propaganda unit is under suspicion for secretly distributing anti-Pyongyang leaflets to North Korea for similar reasons.

On Wednesday, the defense ministry officially removed the former head of the Drone Operations Command.
