Seoul: The defense ministry will host a ceremony on Monday to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations Command (UNC) and honor the sacrifices made by U.N. troops during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the UNC was established in 1950 following the outbreak of the conflict. It functioned as a U.S.-led multinational command responsible for maintaining peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and facilitating cooperation among allied nations.

The ceremony, led by Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, will gather ministerial and vice ministerial officials from 22 nations, including defense chiefs from the Philippines and South Africa. Minister Ahn acknowledged the contributions of the UNC and U.N. forces, stating that South Korea's development was made possible due to their sacrifices and devotion. He emphasized the importance of remembering the spirit of solidarity and working with the international community to defend peace.

The event will also be attended by descendants of Korean War veterans from Colombia, France, and Germany. During the Korean War, more than 1.9 million service members from UNC member states, including the United States, Britain, and Australia, contributed combat, medical, and logistical support. The war technically remains unresolved as a peace treaty was never signed.
