Seoul: Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back stated on Monday his belief that the U.S. Forces Korea's (USFK) recent modernization initiatives are primarily focused on enhancing deterrence against North Korea on the Korean Peninsula. This comes amidst speculation about potential shifts in the USFK's role as the United States increasingly emphasizes countering China's assertiveness in the region.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn shared his perspective during a parliamentary audit session when questioned about the U.S. efforts to modernize its alliance. He expressed that the strengthening of USFK's military capabilities is fundamentally aimed at deterring North Korea. In recent developments, the U.S. military has introduced several advanced weapons systems in South Korea, including the Indirect Fire Protection Capability air defense system, known as the U.S. version of the Iron Dome, as well as MQ-9 Reaper drones and new surveillance aircraft.
Ahn also addressed recent comments by U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll, which labeled both North Korea and China as "basic threats" to regional security. Ahn disagreed with this assessment but did not elaborate further. He acknowledged the U.S. push for "collective security" against China, suggesting that the U.S. might believe joint actions are necessary against various factors in the Indo-Pacific. However, he emphasized that from South Korea's perspective, addressing North Korean threats should remain the primary focus.
Despite acknowledging China's new weapons systems as "complex" threats, Ahn assured that preparations are underway to address these risks. He reiterated the importance of maintaining firing drills and maneuvering training near the inter-Korean border, despite efforts to revive a suspended military tension reduction agreement. Ahn noted that relevant ministries would continue to cooperate on this issue.
In his opening remarks at the audit session, Ahn highlighted the complex and unpredictable security threats facing the military, including North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile threats. He pledged to build a strong military equipped with cutting-edge technology while ensuring a robust readiness posture.
